Beethoven's landmark Octet for Winds, Op. 103, composed at Bonn in 1792, was transcribed in 1795 by the composer and recast as the String Quintet, Op. 4.  The Octet, not published until 1834, was thereby given a higher opus designation.  The current edition by Josh Byrd is essentially a transcription of the String Quintet back to its original form, maintaining Beethoven's expansive revisions not extant in the original Octet.

Gloria in D by Antonio Vivaldi dates from 1715.  Now available for performance by double quintet chamber winds in this new edition, the five movements included are "Domini fili Unigenite," "Domine Deus," "Laudamus te," Domine Deus, Agnus Dei," and "Cum Sancto Spiritu."  Vivaldi's music still enchants the modern listener, and this edition for chamber winds will please performers and audiences alike.

SCORECAST

Although Sibelius wrote extensively for solo piano, he is not known for his keyboard music. The Six Impromptus from 1893 stem from early in his creative period, during which time he composed his first popular orchestral works Kullervo (1892), and the Karelia Suite (1893).  Impromptu No. 3 is moderate in tempo and folk-like in character, unmistakably in the style of a march.  Maestro & Fox Music now offers this new symphonic band edition by Mark E. Maronde.
